The cleaning and hygiene industry is ‘flushed’ with anticipation over one of the most exciting awards ceremonies of the year – the British Toilet Association’s Loo of the Year Awards 2015, which will take place at St. Johns Hotel in Solihull on Friday 4th December.
Toilet users from the length and breadth of the UK have been voting for their favourite ‘away from home’ facilities in no less than sixty different categories, to reward high standards in public toilets – a virtue that we can all agree is worthy of recognition. The nominated toilets are judged from the perspectives of their users, and the rigorous criteria cover their fitness for purpose and how well they meet the needs of those who use them, including parents with babies and people with disabilities.
Previous winners of the Loo of the Year Awards – known as the ‘Toilet Oscars’ to those in the industry – include toilet contractor Danfo, Brighton and Hove City Council, and Staffordshire City Council, so the winners of the 2015 awards will join a prestigious (toilet) roll of honour when their lavish loos scoop an esteemed award at the glittering ceremony.
What makes an award-winning washroom?
All toilets nominated for a Loo of the Year Award are subjected to a stringent inspection and grading against 100 criteria, from the clarity of their signage and accessibility, to their overall maintenance and of course, cleanliness. No area of the washroom will be safe as even the size of the cubicles, cleanliness of the floor grouting and air temperature will be taken into consideration by the judges.
However all of this is to ensure that the various Loo of the Year accolades are awarded to truly deserving winners, as their caretakers and managers (U-)bend over backwards to provide world-class facilities for their visitors.
Rewarding a different class of washroom
The National Category Awards include 60 individual categories across the following areas:
- Leisure (e.g. Parks and Gardens, Water & Theme Parks)
- Heritage (e.g. Museums & Galleries, Libraries)
- Holiday Parks
- Car Parks
- Public Toilets
- Mobile Toilets
Popular individual categories include Pubs, Superstores and Supermarkets and Shopping Centres, where competition is especially tough.
In addition to these awards there are also several National Awards each for England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, as well as the Eco-Friendly Toilet Award which recognises the most environmentally-friendly toilets across all of the categories, and the Changing Places Toilet Award for the most accommodating toilets for people with disabilities who require carers.
Then of course there is the Overall Loo of the Year Awards Trophy, the winner of which is presented with the prestigious Golden Loo Seat! This year’s sponsor of the Overall Trophy will be Tork, who are also the headline sponsor of the 2015 Loo of the Year Awards.
And it’s not just the washrooms themselves that will be honoured, as the Attendant of the Year Awards seek to recognise the people responsible for taking care of the UK’s best washrooms. There will be commendations on team and individual levels, as well as for external contractors – after all, they are the people who do all the hard (and dirty) work!
We’ll share with you the winners of the Loo of the Year Awards 2015 after the event, but until then, we’d love to hear from you if you have entered one or more of the categories.
